Google Maps reveals its first interface in augmented reality

No release date yet, but already a virtual fox in augmented reality to help us find ourselves in the streets.

Who better than Googles Maps can have fun playing with the possibilities of augmented reality? At the Google I / O conference, the company unveiled new features for Street View and Maps. For now, the idea is mainly to show the points of interest and directions to follow in real time and augmented reality. One way to provide visual and fun support to Google Maps users.

In this new mode, the screen will be split in two. At the bottom, we can find the classic navigation mode of Google Maps with a map and a cursor showing the position of the user. Above, the screen will display the Street View mode in real time and augmented reality. So when you walk around, when you point your phone to a restaurant, a building or any point of interest, Google will display a small window giving the characteristics of places, opening hours or the rating of other users. As in the pictures below.

It will also be possible to activate an augmented reality guide that will take you to your destination. Because yes, it's always important to have a cute little pet to keep us company. Even in augmented reality.
"Matcher" with his favorite places

In parallel with these features in AR, the company has made some other announcements, including the creation of a tab "For you". This one will propose personalized recommendations according to our tastes and needs using the data collected by the search engine and Google Maps. In this tab, we will also find "matches", that is to say places that Google believes correspond to our inclinations, accompanied by a percentage "affinity". Finally, Google Maps will create lists of places that we can share or edit with other users.

Coming soon, we’re adding a new tab to @googlemaps called "For you." Designed to tell you what you need to know about the neighborhoods you care about, see new places that are opening or whats trending, personal recommendations and more. #io18 pic.twitter.com/CtqQsWFyot

These last two options - custom lists and recommendations - will be available this summer on Android and iOS. As for augmented reality, Google talks about the "next few months", but gave no specific date to frolic on the streets with this little virtual fox.
